Day 1: Arrival – Chiang Mai

Arrival in Chiang Mai and welcome by your local guide, then transfer to your hotel.

In the afternoon, explore the ancient town of Chiang Mai, including its old city walls, gates, moat and markets. After visiting Wat Suan Dok, where the ashes of Chiang Mai’s Royal Family are interred, and the historic Jed Yod Temple, we drive up the mountain by “songtaew” onto a rough dirt road to the Chang Khien Coffee Research Project where you can enjoy a cup of the local ‘arabica’ surrounded by fabulous gardens of flowers. Continue to the white Hmong village of Chang Khien where the 800 inhabitants still wear their traditional hill tribe clothes and practice a culture that dates back 500 years, and then end your day at Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the temple on the mountain, and the most sacred in Northern Thailand. Your experienced guide will explain the story of the temple, the white elephant and lead you around its impressive chedi and show its beautiful murals. In the late afternoon, the tourist masses left the temple grounds and dusk will give you a very special atmosphere. After your private blessing ceremony, witness the magical evening chanting of the monks. The tour ends with the spectacularly romantic evening view over Chiang Mai with its millions of glittering lights.

Day 2: Chiang Mai

Drive north of Chiang Mai, through the hilly, forested area to the Chiang Dao young elephants training camp (1.5 hrs).  We board these beautiful ancient animals, as they take a slow walk with their Mahouts (elephant owners) through thick forested area and across streams (roundtrip 50 mins). Enjoy a local lunch before boarding a bamboo raft for a gentle ride down the Ping River. We then hop back into our vehicle and venture further north 20 kms, to explore a Palong hilltribe village. Our scenic drive takes us past local schools, crop land, temples and pretty orchids. We take a walk around the village to learn about their culture and extensive herb gardens, then up to a scenic viewpoint with sweeping views of Chiang Dao’s breathtaking mountainous area.

Day 3: Chiang Mai

Leave your hotel early morning (06.00 am) and head west of the old city. Arrive at Ton Payom market in time to buy dishes and join the locals during the daily alms giving ceremony to the monks. Then enjoy a delicious breakfast. Proceed to Wat Umong, a heavily forested temple covered by moss and small plants offering a unique yet charming sense of natural decay. After a walk through its mysterious tunnels, you reach the Viharn of the temple to experience your own private blessing ceremony. Continue to Wat Suan Dok which is famous for its whitewashed Lanna stupas. The International Buddhist Studies Center adjacent to the temple offers a unique opportunity to learn and informally exchange ideas with the monks about Buddhism and other general topics.

Take you for lunch at a restaurant, aimed at elevating “Khao Soy” curry noodles from its street food status to its rightful place as the signature dish of northern Thai cuisine.

In the afternoon, we travel to a local farmhouse in Mae Rim on the outskirts of Chiang Mai where you will take a leisurely stroll around the grounds. Then board a long-tail boat and enjoy a 30-minute cruise along the rural Mae Ping River. Along the river banks, you will see traditional wooden houses and modern residences. Arrive at a boat landing and walk about 10 minutes from the landing to Waroros fresh food Market for a visit, experiencing the Northern Thai way of life.
